After reading a interesting comment in another video about Haibane Renmei, I started thinking about something I once heard saying about Pink Floyd's song "Wish you were Here" (I think from one of the band members himself...) Basically Wish you were here isn't, as many think, a song dedicated to the loss of their band mate and friend Syd Barrett, but a song about longing and loss for something/someone, made so universal as to be "usable" on every situation which involves that kind of emotion. Well, then what? I think in a way Haibane Renmei is the Whish you were Here of anime, its setting, the directing, the narrative, the portrayal of feelings is made in a way that we can read its symbols and moments in a vast array of ways, from a literal allegory of Purgatory to various kind of situation of emotional "limbo" etc. It's a interesting show and a interesting experiment, I'd say a exemplary child of that kind of 90s-00s experimentation we don't really see anymore in anime. We still see people adapting unhortodox and peculiar things and even a feeeew original productions, but I've never seen again this kind of exploration of pure feelings, like you can see in Haibane Renmei or for example in Yokohama Shopping Log

Im still stuck watching anime from the 1980's and 1990's to very early 2000's. I think most shows that era are better than 99% of these copying , same shit cutesy teen highschool pervert power fantasy puke vomit shit. Chainsaw man, not good, not terrible, full of cringe, i just watched jujutsu and was instantly reminded about both shows being similar. Then theres weird rip-off worse inspriation shows like bungo stray dogs, and cowboy bebop's spike. Bungo one is a gayer version wrapped in bandages thats in the same gang mafia ex, its just never done as good. And there's super magical powers bullshit added into it. I get and understand escaping reality. But when shows are more grounded, with relatable issues and characters its so much better, and when they respect the world and rules they made with their creation. Having an incredibly hard time watching tv shows and especially anime. It makes me want to puke, like a bad girl straight to video

I really appreciate your analysis of the closing scene. I hadn't looked that deeply into it. I thought we were looking at a mirror, but showing the visuals side by side, *the equipment is different* (different number of hoses coming out of the containers, different desk, etc). In other parts of the franchise, we see Motoko operating multiple cybernetic bodies simultaneously, something an ordinary human being would find all but impossible (not just motor functions, but _being_ two or three people at once). Perhaps it is not so much a gift as a curse: there may be one physical cyberbrain which contains organic pieces of the original Motoko Kusanagi's brain, but since merging with 2501, she can no longer exist as a singular entity--she is a _network_ . Perhaps Batou has been tirelessly retrofitting dolls to upload a massive output of consciousness from the original cyberbrain, and we are shown some amalgamation of the first awakening of that brain and a subsequent "offspring", demonstrating that 2501's theory was correct in that there would be children from their merging and also that Motoko's sense of self is only tenuously tied to her organic remnants.

Visually to me newer anime has less perceived detail on characters. I also don't like the perfectly clean colors backgrounds and characters. I think newer animes are done they should still be printed out to film then rescanned.
